For immediate release: Belmar Arts Council Community Mural DayBelmar NJ October 5, 2007 - For those who ride the train, live in our Senior Citizens' Residence, or just have occasion to travel 7th Avenue west of Main St., you've probably noticed the mural underway at the Belmar Arts Council's headquarters at the Boatworks, 608 River Road. Many early mornings and late afternoons this summer, BAC artists Pat Hutchinson, Paul Bonelli, Beth Gersten and Merry Brennan have climbed the scaffolding against the south wall of the building to recreate a view of Belmar's three westernmost bridges over Shark River. During early September, the mural sprouted two 3-D components, compliments of local mural artist Bob Mataranglo. All paints, brushes and other art materials used in the mural have been provided by Siperstein's Home Centers The bridge scene is one third of a design that will soon feature a cut-away version of the river. And this is where YOU come in -- the Arts Council hopes to gather input from the community to answer the question: WHAT DO YOU THINK LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE? On Saturday, October 20, the Arts Council invites all community members - kids, adults, artists and the avowedly art-challenged -- to come by the Boatworks between noon and 3 pm. to express their ideas. A large indoor version of the mural, measuring 4' x18' will be on display, and guests will be invited to pick up markers, paints, colored paper and other art media, then create images to attach to the indoor mural. Fish of all kinds? scuba divers? mermaids? pirate treasure? the Yellow Submarine? - come and share your suggestions! If you really don't want to draw, then bring a photo, write a poem, perform a song! There will be cider and cookies to stimulate those creative juices! The indoor wall mural will be laminated and displayed at prominent places around town. BAC artists will choose images from the sketch mural to enlarge and incorporate into the outdoor mural. The finished mural will be dedicated December 2, as part of the Belmar's Winterfest celebration. The Community Mural Day coincides with the reception, Oct. 20 from 12 to 2 pm., of artwork for the BAC's Youth Art Show. The show will run from Oct.27 to November 4. Children in Grades K-12 are invited to submit one piece each for inclusion in the exhibit. The entries will be judged by Belmar Seniors, and ribbons will be awarded at the opening reception on Saturday, October 27 between 2 and 4 pm. Please put October 20 on your calendar, and for homework, think about what secrets and treasure may lie just below the surface of Shark River Inlet.
